How to Drape a Saree Step by Step for Beginners (Easy Guide 2026)

Step-by-Step Guide to Drape a Saree (Nivi Style – Most Common)
The Nivi style is the most popular and easiest saree draping style in India.
Step 1: Tuck the Saree
Start from the plain end (non-pallu side).
Tuck the saree into the petticoat at your right side.
Wrap it once around your waist from right to left.
Make sure the lower edge touches the floor slightly.
Step 2: Make the Pleats
Now take the loose fabric and start making pleats.
Make 5–7 pleats (equal width)
Each pleat should be around 4–5 inches wide
Align them neatly
Hold the pleats together and tuck them into the center of your petticoat.
Secure with a safety pin if needed.
 Tip: Make sure pleats fall straight and flat.
Step 3: Wrap and Bring the Pallu
After tucking pleats, take the remaining fabric around your waist once more.
Bring the pallu over your left shoulder.
The pallu length should reach your knee or slightly below.
Step 4: Pleat the Pallu
You can either or  Keep it open (for modern look)
 Make neat pleats and pin on shoulder (for traditional look)
Secure the pallu with a safety pin on your blouse.
